Turkey’s largest oil tanker was ablaze in the Tuzla dockyard here on Feb 13th, 1997 with an explosion.18 people were injured in the fire, most of them firefighters. Two of them, hurt in the original blast, were in serious condition. Dockyard workers had left the ship at the end of their shift when the explosions began.
Officials said the oil tanker, at 159,982 dead-weight tons, was Turkey’s largest. The tanker, which was built in 1977 and is owned by the Istanbul company Ditas, was in the yard for repairs.
